GrowReady

Youth, agriculture & place-based readiness

A place-based youth readiness model connecting agriculture and land-based learning, community site activation and cross-community cohorts to broader education, work and civic pathways.

The premise

Readiness can start with places young people already know.

GrowReady is designed to use farms, gardens, community sites, schools and other local assets as structured settings for exploration, responsibility and skill development. Agriculture is a practical entry point, not a limit on the model: the goal is to build readiness and expose young people to pathways that fit the needs and assets of their communities.

Design components

Four pieces should work together.

Land-based learning

Use agriculture, food systems, conservation and related hands-on settings to teach applied skills, problem solving and responsibility.

Site activation

Turn an existing local asset into a structured learning environment with defined supervision, safety, transportation and operating roles.

Cross-community cohort

Create opportunities for young people from different schools or communities to learn together, build networks and see pathways beyond a single institution.

Readiness and mobility

Connect the experience to employability, further education, credentials, entrepreneurship or other next steps instead of treating participation as an endpoint.

Feasibility before launch

Questions the first sprint should answer.

Demand and population
Which young people would participate, what barriers affect access, and what would schools and families view as useful?
Host site and operations
What site can support the work, who supervises it, and what transportation, insurance, safety and scheduling requirements apply?
Learning and pathway value
Which skills are being built, how do they connect to school or industry pathways, and which employers or training providers validate that value?
Partner roles
Which responsibilities belong to districts, ISDs, FFA/4-H, agriculture organizations, employers, workforce providers and NCI?
Measurement
Track participation, retention, readiness gains, pathway exposure, referrals, partner burden and next-step conversion.
Scale decision
Set a clear point for continuing, redesigning or stopping the model based on evidence rather than momentum alone.

Potential implementation network

Build around institutions already serving young people.

Potential partners can include districts and ISDs, FFA and 4-H, farms and agriculture organizations, conservation and food-system partners, rural economic-development organizations, workforce and training providers, community foundations and evaluators. Listing a partner category does not imply endorsement or participation.

Relationship to BuildReady

Grow readiness, then build the transition.

GrowReady is the earlier place-based layer: exploration, hands-on learning, site activation and readiness. BuildReady is the transition layer: employer validation, stackable credentials, training design, placement and measurable economic value. They are connected parts of the Mobility & Pathways lane rather than competing programs.

Evidence before expansion

A pilot should produce a decision, not just activity.

  • Participation and retention by school or community.
  • Transportation and scheduling barriers that materially affect access.
  • Skills, readiness or pathway knowledge measured before and after participation.
  • Employer, educator and host-site assessments of usefulness and operating burden.
  • Documented next steps into education, training, work, leadership or continued programming.
  • A written scale, redesign or stop decision after the initial cohort.
